冯·诺依曼根据老师图灵（计算机之父）的思想提出计算机工作原理，并参与研制了由“存储器+运算器+控制器+输入设备+输出设备”构成五位一体的“冯·诺依曼计算机”，在此基础上，上世纪八十年代由IBM公司率先改进和成功研制了PC机，计算机等智能设备就飞速发展起来了。
没有操作系统及应用软件的计算机硬件叫“裸机”，仅仅是摆设，什么事都做不了，只有在计算机硬件上安装了操作系统和其他丰富的应用软件后才算是真正意义上的计算机，这就引入了“硬件”、“软件”的概念，通过“硬件不足，软件来补”的特殊功效实现了计算机无所不能的智能化、自动化和信息化这一产业革命。
大家都知道，软件开发过程是一个稳定性与功能性的挑战过程，是推动计算机发展的源动力，也是软件的生命周期，软件更新升级也就是克服用户体验稳定性、不断增加或改进软件功能性，更新升级停止，软件生命也就停止了。因此，软件又引入了“版本”的概念，并以各种版本的名义针对不同用户分别发布。这正是每个计算机用户要正确对待软件开发商为什么必须“更新”的良苦用心。

【忠告】
除了Windows更新导致蓝屏死机等问题外，硬件驱动程序更新升级同样会与系统冲突而导致蓝屏死机等问题，因此，系统安装时自动适配好驱动程序后就不需要再格外进行驱动程序的更新升级了。
